RackPRONearly everyone that’s climbed trad has had to pass by a good placement because they’ve used up the gear that would have protected it. You’ve punched a “hole” in your rack – it happens when the pitch demands more gear of a particular size than what you’re carrying. Holes are bad: they force you to downclimb or run it out to the next placement.Fortunately, you can reduce the chances of this unpleasant experience occurring. You can place your gear strategically. You can place fewer pieces on easier ground, saving gear to protect more difficult climbing. And you can stack the odds in your favor by carrying the right gear. RackPRO is a computer program to help you select the right gear for your rack. Given a list of gear, a computer can analyze a rack, pinpoint its weak areas, and suggest gear to fill them in. RackPRO is the first software developed to do this. Download the RackPRO articleDownload the RackPRO release article here (Microsoft Word Format).Very brief instructions are available here.
